Ryan had planned a mini-vacation with her sister and a couple of girlfriends so Jon, Nathan and Sam came over to stay while they were away. The weather was not very cooperative so we had to find indoor activities. One day we went out to lunch and then to the library. French fries are always a success and there were lots of things to look at in the library. Sam and Zayde gravitated towards the computer station. Perhaps Sam has inherited his grandfather’s computing genes!
Nathan went directly to the section on trucks. How did he know where it was? He hasn’t been to the Pleasanton Library often. Perhaps he just has a truck honing device. After picking out some books, Nathan sat contentedly while Jon read to him.
It was great having “the boys” stay over. They seemed to enjoy themselves and slept well. Hopefully, they’ll come and stay again some time.
Right after they left for home Wednesday afternoon, Beeba and Zayde had a little lie-down. We slept well too!
I’ve just been reviewing the pictures that I took on the day we went up to Sonoma and Napa and have discovered that they are all pictures of food or of where we ate! Not surprising, I guess.
We started out early as we had decided to stop for breakfast before heading up to the Sonoma area. I found Flippy’s Cafe on the internet. It’s in Rodeo, CA and we’ve never even been to the town although it’s only about a half and hour away. Seriously, how could we pass up eating at a breakfast place named Flippy’s? Must be named after awesome flapjacks or something. As is often the case, though, the name was better than the product and we had an overpriced mediocre breakfast.
We stopped first at Jacuzzi Winery to make our wine club selections. This was followed by a visit to Robledo Winery and more selecting. Robledo is our newest wine club. The place has a nice story of an immigrant family who worked the fields saving up and buying land to grow grapes and make wine. Our final stop was a Imagery Winery to pick up another wine shipment. Having completed our wine chores by around 2 PM, we headed over the mountains into Napa and decided to have lunch at Bottega in Yountville. Since our quest continues to be finding the perfect calamari, we started with the calamari appetizer. Our first two requests for wine were unfortunately unavailable. The waitress suggested a white Italian white by Scarpetta. I like the pig on the label.
John’s main course was hand made pasta. The sauce with it had little pieces of sausage in it and it was piled high with clams. He said it was really good.
And here’s my pasta which was also hand-made. It had a light herb sauce and goat cheese. It was quite tasty although it had a lot of black pepper on it. I am not a fan of black pepper. But I was hungry and ate it anyway. At the end of the meal, the maitre ‘d came over and asked how we liked our lunch. We said it was very good but I thought there was too much black pepper in my pasta. He was taken aback. He said he was going to talk to the chef because there shouldn’t be black pepper on it. Well, long story short, even though I had eaten it they took it off the bill. I was pretty impressed.
All in all, a fun day up in Wine Country. It is so cool to live here and be able to go wine sampling only and hour or so away.
As so often happens in our family, it’s hard to get everyone together at the same time. John and I are frequently off gallivanting around, Sarah has her cons, and Ryan and Jon are busy with family life. So it wasn’t until this past weekend that we got around to having our Passover celebration with the family. John enjoys relating the story and you can see that both Sam and Nathan are enrapt.
Of course, it is difficult to engage the little ones for too long but this year Nathan really paid attention and asked some questions. He enjoyed the singing and was interested in the special foods.
Here is Nathan raising his first cup of wine. When we talked about leaning on the left side, he raised his left arm to show us he knew his left from his right. That’s something that Sarah still has trouble with. (Although she says it is my fault for not insisting that she crawl as a baby.)
It’s always fun to have the family gathered around the table. We started our Passover traditions way back before we were married and we look forward to it every year.
